Sri Lanka to sign Paris Agreement
The Minister of Science, Technology and Research, Susil Premajayantha, is scheduled to sign the Paris Agreement on Climate Change (COP21), on behalf of Sri Lanka on the 22nd of April 2016, at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Sri Lanka voted in favour of the COP21 at the 21st session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, held in the French capital last year.
Indo-Lanka ambulance service to begin operations
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Harsha De Silva, distributed appointment letters to the first batch of 140 first-aid technical officers to undertake a training programme in India.
The Indian Government has provided nearly Rs.1 billion towards this project. Initially, 88 ambulances will be rolled out in the Western and Southern Provinces.
Sri Lanka seeks equity swap from China
Sri Lanka is seeking to exchange part of its debt owed to China, which is valued at US $8 billion, for equity in infrastructure projects.
Addressing journalists in Beijing, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, noted that the two Governments are looking at the possibility of some infrastructure projects becoming public-private partnerships.
Ukrainian PM resigns
Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, has announced his resignation. The announcement was made following months of political and economic turmoil in Ukraine.
The resignation comes amidst accusations of corruption and inaction towards the government, with his party’s national approval ratings dropping to a mere 2%.
At least 100 killed in Kerala temple fire
A fire caused by a firework display at a temple in the South Indian state of Kerala has left more than 100 people dead.
According to local authorities, the fire broke out at 3.30 am, during a Hindu new year celebration on Sunday.
Brussels attackers meant to target France
Belgium’s federal prosecutor has stated that the Brussels attackers had plans to carry out another attack in France, subsequent to last year’s Paris attacks.
According to the prosecutor, the Belgian based militant cell behind the Brussels attacks was forced to strike closer to home due to the strict counter-terrorism measures, following the Paris attacks.
