Sri Lanka and the Philippines sign MoU

The governments of Sri Lanka and the Philippines have finalised a Memorandum of Understanding with the intention of improving bilateral relations.

The Memorandum focuses on mutual exchange and consultations on issues relevant to the two countries, and to the international community.

EU delegation meets senior official

A parliamentary delegation from the European Union called on the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Karunasena Hettiarachchi, yesterday.

The delegation discussed matters related to development with the Secretary.

Government may export energy by 2050

The Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Energy, Dr. B.M.S. Batagoda, has remarked that excess supplies of energy, following the satisfaction of local demands, could potentially be exported by 2050.

He made this remark on the sidelines of the second South Asian Energy Regulators Conference, which got underway on Monday.

The United States Supreme Court has issued a decision that stays President Barack Obama’s clean power plan.

The clean power plan, which is the focal point of the President’s climate change proposals, aimed to regulate carbon emissions from power plants.

Iran ready to negotiate on oil with Saudi Arabia and OPEC

With trade sanctions lifted, Iran’s oil minister, Bijan Zangeneh, stated that his country is ready to negotiate with Saudi Arabia and OPEC.

Iran has resumed oil exports with the removal of Western sanctions. It aims to regain market share and return to pre-sanction production levels, a move which is expected to add pressure to the already oversupplied oil market.

6.4 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan

Approximately 24 people were confirmed dead after a powerful earthquake hit southern Taiwan, early this week.

The collapse of a 17-storey building reportedly inflicted the most damage, trapping at least 247 people.
