SAARC considers energy cooperation plan

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation is planning to implement an energy cooperation strategy to facilitate cross-border energy trade among its members. 

A central regulatory authority is to oversee the implementation of the regional energy cooperation agreements.

Minister of Industry and Commerce concludes visit to Bahrain

The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Rishad Bathiudeen, recently concluded a visit to Bahrain, aimed to improve bilateral relations.

During his visit, the Minister also spoke at the International Institute of Inspiration Economy located in the capital Manama.

Sri Lankan swimmers win big at SAG

Sri Lanka won eight gold medals and was placed in second position behind India in the overall rankings at the close of the third day of the South Asian Games.

Sri Lankan swimmers won four of these gold medals, with swimmers Matthew Abeysinghe and Kimiko Raheem setting new South Asian records.

Aviation industry in agreement to reduce airlines emissions

The International Civil Aviation Organization announced its first-ever binding limit on airlines emissions, in a bid to address climate change. 

The attempt to curb carbon dioxide emissions in airplanes will apply to all planes delivered after 2028. 

Syrian opposition calls for support

Opponents of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, have called for military aid from Arab nations in the face of mounting Russian airstrikes and the resulting inability to cope with the military strength of Assad loyalists.

Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Bahrain are yet to send troops to support the militants in east Aleppo despite their calls for urgent support.

UN report indicates lack of preparation for disease outbreaks

A draft report of a United Nations panel, convened to analyse outbreaks of disease, warns that there is a lack of preparation globally to fight deadly pandemics.

The report also criticized the current inadequacies of the World Health Organization, and called for its reform in order to effectively respond to global outbreaks.
