New Attorney General appointed

President’s Counsel Jayantha Jayasuriya was appointed Sri Lanka’s 29th Attorney General today.

Mr. Jayasuriya, who has previously served as Senior Additional Solicitor General, was recommended to the post by the Constitutional Council of Sri Lanka.

U.S. government plans aid for Sri Lanka

The United States government has proposed providing $31 million of aid to Sri Lanka, aimed at facilitating reconciliation and curtailing corruption.

The U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, made the proposal during the budget presented to Congress.

Minimum wage bill proposed to Parliament

The government has presented a bill to Parliament that stipulates mandatory minimum reimbursements for workers. 

The minimum monthly pay recommended for employees of the industry and service sectors is Rs. 10,000, whereas the minimum daily wage is to be Rs. 400.

Hong Kong stocks fall by 4%

The Hong Kong stock market dropped by 4%, its biggest fall in six months, when it reopened today after a break of three days for the Lunar New Year.

The Hong Kong market is the second in the region to take a recent plunge, following the Japanese Nikkei.

Brazil goes ahead with carnival despite Zika

An annual Brazilian carnival is underway in full swing with about a million revelers partaking, despite the spread of the Zika virus.

Brazilians taking to the streets is of serious concern to the public health officials, who are trying to curb the spread of the mosquito-borne virus.

Turkey rejects EU condition on refugees

Turkey rejected a proposal made by the European Union to take in refugees in exchange for the barring of the Aegean Sea route.  

The chair of the European Union, the Netherlands, had earlier proposed to encourage volunteer countries to take in 250,000 refugees annually, if Ankara agreed to close the Aegean Sea route through which refugees reach Greece.
