On 15 July 2026, the team from the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRSS) visited the Port of Colombo, marking the Institute’s second field visit of 2026.
The objective of the visit was to observe the Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) stationed at the Port of Colombo and to gain firsthand insights into their operational capabilities and strategic significance to Sri Lanka’s maritime security. The experience provided the team with a deeper understanding of the vessels’ design, functionality and role in safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain. The team toured the OPV SLNS Gajabahu (P626), exploring its various sections and learning about its engineering systems, operational mechanisms and onboard capabilities. The vessel’s Captain Arosha Jayathunge received the delegation.
The LKIIRSS delegation comprised of LKIIRSS Board Member Rear Admiral (Retd.) Y. N. Jayarathna, Senior Research Fellows Ms. Nillasi Liyanage, Ms. Piyumani Ranasinghe and Ms. Madhuka Rukmalgama, together with eleven LKIIRSS interns.
