The Executive Director of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relation and Strategic Studies (LKI), Ambassador Ravinatha Aryasinha welcomed Ms. Katarina Platere, Director General of the Bilateral Relations Directorate, and Ms. Ligita Davidova, Head of the Asia and Oceania Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, along with Dr. Vernon Manil Fernando, Honorary Consul of Latvia in Sri Lanka, during their visit to Sri Lanka on 9 July 2024, to the Institute.
Discussions highlighted the longstanding relations between Sri Lanka and Latvia, emphasizing mutual respect and cooperation. The discussion also included geopolitical challenges faced by both nations as small states, the outcome of the recent European Parliament elections, educational exchanges and economic cooperation, particularly in diversifying trade beyond traditional goods. Ambassador Aryasinha noted the underutilization of Sri Lanka’s tariff lines under the GSP+ scheme, highlighting potential for increased bilateral trade.
