Hon. Prof Gamini Lakshman Peiris was appointed as the Foreign Minister on 16th August, 2021. Previously, he served as the Minister of Education, Minister of External Affairs, Minister of Export Development and International Trade, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Minister of Ethnic Affairs and National Integration, Deputy Minister of Finance and Minister of Industrial Development.

Professor Peiris is a distinguished academic who previously served as the Vice Chancellor at the University of Colombo from 1988 – 1994. He was also a Visiting Fellow at Christ’s College, University of Cambridge, a SMUTS Visiting Fellow in Commonwealth Studies at the University of Cambridge and a Butterworths Visiting Fellow in the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in the University of London. Professor Peiris has authored a number of books in the fields of property law, criminal procedure, law of evidence and administrative law. He is the author of 12 books and over 75 papers published in international journals.

Hon. Prof. Peiris obtained his Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours from the University of Ceylon and was a Rhodes scholar at the University of Oxford, where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in 1971. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Colombo.
