Executive Director of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies (LKI), Amb. Ravinatha Aryasinha participated in the Fourth Meeting of the Eminent Persons’ Group on the Future Directions of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) on Tuesday, 25 June 2024. The LKI is the Sri Lankan focal point of the BIMSTEC Network of Policy Think Tanks,
During his remarks Amb. Aryasinha highlighting the need for quick tangible results, suggested several functional areas through which BIMSTEC could achieve this goal, including youth engagement, development of tourism and media outreach. He recalled that during the visit of HE Indra Mani Pandey, Secretary General of BIMSTEC to the LKI in April, an interactive session was held on the title ‘Regional cooperation through BIMSTEC’, which witnessed the participation of a large number of young people including university students. He also noted the importance of increasing BIMSTEC’s visibility by building relationships with media, which in turn would connect the organisation with the general public. Finally, he suggested that more be done on tourism as a tangible area of cooperation which could connect the region.
Mr. Nilupul Gunawardena, Research Fellow (Global Governance) and Mr. Dulanaka Jayasinghe, Research Assistant of the LKI also participated representing the LKI.
