The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment & Tourism organized a solemn
alms-giving ceremony through the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International
Relations and Strategic Studies (LKIIRSS) on 12 August 2025 to mark the 20th
anniversary of the passing of the late Foreign Minister, Hon. Lakshman Kadirgamar,
PC.
Delivering the anusāsana (sermon), Ven. Boralande Vajiraggnana Thero, Chief
Incumbent of Sri Sambodhi Vihāra, Colombo, reflected on the late Minister’s enduring
statesmanship, commitment to national unity, and lifelong service to Sri Lanka. The sermon was followed by pirith chanting, invoking blessings on the Institute’s continued
mission and the work carried out in the national interest.
The ceremony was attended by Hon. Vijitha Herath, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Foreign Employment & Tourism, Ms. Suganthie Kadirgamar, the Acting Executive
Director of the Institute, members of the Board of Management, and senior officers from
the Foreign Ministry. Staff of the Institute were also present in reverence.
This observance is part of a series of commemorative initiatives, including the release of
a special documentary on Hon. Kadirgamar’s life and legacy, produced by the Public
Diplomacy Division of the Ministry. The documentary, available on official Ministry
platforms, serves as a powerful reminder of his vision and unwavering dedication to Sri
Lanka’s place in the world.
As the LKIIRSS Institute, the Ministry, and the nation reflect on two decades since his
untimely passing, the alms-giving served not only as a tribute to the late Hon. Lakshman
Kadirgamar’s remarkable service, but also as a reaffirmation of the values he
championed — integrity, patriotism, and principled diplomacy. His legacy continues to
inspire generations of Sri Lankans.
