The Executive Director of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relation and Strategic Studies (LKI), Ambassador Ravinatha Aryasinha received Senior Lecturer of the Faculty of Law at the University of Technology Sydney, Dr. Robin Bowley, who is on a visit to Sri Lanka on 20 January 2025 at LKI. Dr. Bowley was accompanied by Former Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy, Rear Admiral Pradeep Ratnayaka.
The discussion highlighted the complexities of international law in addressing terrorist threats, possible actions to challenges faced by small states in regards to maritime terrorism, and possible reforms Sri Lanka could enact to further improve our terrorism response capabilities. Ambassador Aryasinha noted the discrepancies between the international community’s response to terrorism and nuclear weapons incidents, with special emphasis on organisations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Possible partnerships between Dr. Bowley and Sri Lankan academic institutes to further their understanding of maritime terrorism was also discussed.
