Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister meets President Sirisena
The Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, Vu Duc Dam, has met with President Sirisena on the sidelines of the Asian Cooperation Dialogue Summit in Bangkok, Thailand.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed increasing high-level meetings between the countries, and the potential of the fisheries and agricultural sectors in enhancing bilateral trade revenue.
Sri Lankan enterprises to receive international support
The European Union has announced that it will provide EUR 8 million to enhance competitiveness and increase trade among small and medium-sized enterprises in Sri Lanka. The project will be implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC), a joint agency between the UN and the WTO.
The Executive Director of the ITC, Arancha González, stated that support from the EU will enable work on trade policy, trade facilitation, quality and value-chain development which will boost the competitiveness of Sri Lankan SMEs.
Navy Commander welcomes Indian naval ship
The Commander of the Navy, Ravindra Wijegunaratne, has visited the crew of the Indian Coast Guard ship, ‘Samudra Paheredar.’ The ‘Samudra Paheredar’ docked at the Port of Colombo on 10 October for a two-day goodwill visit.
The purpose of the visit was to provide the Sri Lankan navy with knowledge of pollution response to strengthen cooperation between the countries in the area of disaster management.
China expresses concern over US involvement in Asia
The Chinese Defense Minister, Chang Wanquan, has expressed China’s concern over U.S. intervention in the South China Sea, following navigation operations regulated in Washington D.C. that are close to artificial islands built by China.
Speaking at the Xiangshan regional defence forum in Beijing, Minister Wanquan also raised concerns over the installation of a THAAD missile defense system in South Korea.
UK supports proposal for war crimes investigation
British Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, has supported French Foreign Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault’s proposal for the International Criminal Court to investigate Russia on alleged war crimes committed in Aleppo.
Mr. Johnson also claimed there was little doubt that Russian forces were intentionally targeting Syrian civilian infrastructure, which is considered to be a violation of international law.
Saudi Arabia halts oil supply to Egypt
Saudi Arabian national oil corporation, Saudi Aramco, has released an official statement to Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), confirming the suspension of refined oil products to Egypt.
Saudi Aramco failed to supply the October share of petroleum products to Egypt, breaching acontractual agreement to supply additional oil to meet the demands of Egypt’s market.
