Sri Lanka and Vietnam to strengthen bilateral ties in agricultural sector
President Maithripala Sirisena and the Prime Minister of of Vietnam, Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, have agreed to establish close ties in the field of agro-technology.
President Sirisena commended Vietnam’s developments in agro-technology, and stated that Sri Lanka could benefit from Vietnam’s technical expertise. Sri Lanka and Vietnam aim to strengthen bilateral relations in the fields of trade, investment, agriculture, and industry.
Denmark explores investment options in Sri Lankan ports
The Ambassador of Denmark for India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka, Peter Taksøe-Jensen, has met with the Minister of Ports and Shipping, Arjuna Ranatunga, to discuss investment opportunities in the ports and shipping sector.
Denmark is home to the world’s biggest global container shipping line, the Maersk Group, and also has a stake in the Colombo port’s South Asia Gateway Terminals facility.
China assists Sri Lankan health sector
The Sri Lankan and Chinese governments signed an agreement on the 25 May with the aim of developing economic and technical cooperation. Under this agreement, China will grant RMB 600 million towards constructing a specialized hospital to treat kidney disease in the Polonnaruwa District.
The grant assistance was initiated following high-level discussions between President Sirisena and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
G7 summit leaders discuss global issues
The G7 members, comprising of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, along with EU representatives, have gathered in Japan for a two day summit. The summit included discussions on the global economy, terrorism, and maritime security.
The G7 members are also holding an Outreach Session on Stability and Prosperity in Asia today with the leaders of several governments, including Sri Lanka, and representatives of international organisations.
Indian President visits China
Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has met with President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders during a four-day visit to China.
The leaders agreed to strengthen bilateral relations in a range of fields. The Chinese delegation expressed their interest in cooperating with India to merge India’s Act-East Policy with China’s One Belt One Road initiative.
UN panel rejects CPJ accreditation
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a press freedom watchdog, has been denied consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council.
The CPJ reports on violations of press freedom in countries and conflict zones around the world. The UN panel, comprising of 19 member states, rejected CPJ’s application that would have given it access to the UN headquarters and events.
