Ampara to host International Women’s Day celebration

The national celebration of International Women’s Day is to be held in Ampara, on 8th March 2016. President Maithripala Sirisena is expected to attend.

Health clinics and a trade fair are among the programmes organized for the event, which is themed, “Empowered Women – Sustainable Future.”

Government delegation visits China

A government delegation is currently in China to explore possibilities for new development ventures, including infrastructure related to the Megapolis project.

A team comprising the Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade, Malik Samarawickrama, Minister of Southern Development and Law and Order, Sagala Ratnayake, and Ambassador Karunasena Kodituwakku, met with officials from leading Chinese banks.

Study reveals wastage of revenue by businesses

According to a study conducted by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, businesses in Sri Lanka waste an average of 4% of their annual revenue. 

Among the chief reasons for this waste are the abandoning of new projects after commencement, delaying of projects, and over-payment for products.

Earthquake strikes near Sumatra

A powerful earthquake of 7.8 magnitude struck the coast of Sumatra, in western Indonesia at 19:49 local time, yesterday.

The resulting tremor was felt sharply in Padang and west Sumatra. Tsunami warnings were issued for Indonesia, Australia, and nearby islands, but were later withdrawn.

Possible new flag for New Zealand

New Zealanders have begun voting in the second stage of a referendum to decide the future of their existing flag.

The referendum allows voters to choose between the current flag and an alternative. According to New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, the current flag lacks distinctiveness, given its similarity to the Australian flag.

US interrogates Islamic State militant

United States officials are interrogating an alleged Islamic State (IS) leader who was captured during a raid last month in Iraq.

The capture and interrogation, believed to be the first of a top IS militant, is viewed as an early success for the Pentagon’s new expeditionary targeting force, which recently began its operations in Iraq.
