Ms. Tabita Rosendal Ebbesen, PhD Researcher, Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies, Lund University, Sweden visited LKI on 7th November 2023. Ms. Ebbesen met with LKI’s Executive Director, Amb. Ravinatha Aryasinha and members of LKI’s research team.
Ms. Ebbesen presented her research to LKI, which mainly focuses on China’s Belt and Road Initiative and port projects in several countries. Ms. Ebbesen has visited Sri Lanka on three occasions in 2023, visiting both Hambantota and Colombo Port City, to better understand the current status of these investment projects and their governance practices.
Following a presentation on her research, LKI’s research team also discussed their perspectives on the current status of these investment projects given the current backdrop of Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic crisis and the economic slowdown in China. Ms. Ebbesen also emphasised the need for more evidence-based research by local think tanks to better understand the current investment landscape in Sri Lanka, which must be used to inform prospective investors and external stakeholders.
Michael Iveson, Research Fellow (Global Economy), Nilupul Gunawardena, Research Fellow (Global Governance) were present at the meeting. Dulanaka Jayasinghe and Dilmini Abeyrathne, Research Assistants, were also in attendance.
