Supreme Court issues ruling on Right to Information Bill

The Supreme Court has declared certain sections of the Right to Information Bill to be unconstitutional. If the court’s suggested amendments are not made, a special two-thirds majority in Parliament will be needed for the bill to pass as law.

A government lawyer has stated that the changes are minor and that the government should have no difficulty in carrying out the amendments.

Sri Lanka to host WHO Regional Committee for South East Asia

The 69th session of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Regional Committee for South East Asia will be held in Sri Lanka, from the 5-9 of September.

The regional committee aims to provide leadership on health-related matters, while providing policy options and technical support to the South East Asia region.

Investor forum addresses unresolved issues

The State Minister of International Trade, Sujeewa Senasinghe, has met with investors at a investor forum held at the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade.

The forum focused on bottlenecks that investors face when starting new projects, and on expanding existing investments under the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka.

Aleppo critical to Syrian peace talks

The UN mediator for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, stated that peace talks could be resumed if truces covering the cities of Damascus and Latakia were extended to Aleppo, Syria’s largest city.

The US and Russia, backed by the UN, have been working towards reviving the original ceasefire agreement, by establishing new short-term truces.

Russia delays UNSC sanctions against North Korea

The decision of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to impose new sanctions on North Korea has been delayed by proposed Russian amendments to the wording agreed upon by other members.

The UNSC resolution, drafted by the US and China, comes on the heels of missile tests carried out by North Korea last Thursday. It is scheduled to be voted upon today.

Ted Cruz drops out of US presidential campaign

Republican presidential candidate, Ted Cruz, has ended his candidacy after losing the Indiana primaries to rival Donald Trump.

Mr. Trump has now won 1,047 delegates of the 1,237 needed to be officially nominated as the Republican candidate for US president. He is followed in 2nd place by John Kasich with 153 delegates.
