Indian Minister of External Affairs to attend the India-Sri Lanka Joint Commission

The Minister of External Affairs of India, Sushma Swaraj, will be attending the ninth periodic session of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Commission to be held this Friday, in Colombo.

The Commission will explore options to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries through trade, energy, socio-cultural matters and maritime regulation.

UN Human Rights High Commissioner to visit Sri Lanka

The United Nations High Commissioner for  Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, is scheduled to make an official visit to Sri Lanka from the 6th to the 9th of this month.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Mahishini Colonne, said that the visit is in response to an invitation extended by the government in February last year.

Preparations underway for talks on Trade and Investment Framework Agreement

United States Assistant Trade Representative for South Asia, Micheal Delaney, met government officials and economic advisers in preparation for the upcoming discussions on the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement, to be held in Washington this month.

He met with key representatives from several Ministries, including from the Ministries of Development Strategy and International Trade, Foreign Affairs, and Public Enterprise Development.

North Korean plans draw criticism

North Korea has made a fresh announcement of its impending plans to launch a long-range rocket into space with a satellite. 

The United States, Japan and South Korea have condemned North Korea’s plans as infringing existing UN resolutions.

Europe-U.S. data transfer pact confirmed

A new data transfer pact has been finalized between Europe and the United States.

The pact, which will be implemented upon the granting of political approval, aims to prevent European Union regulators from restricting data transfers online, and will replace the recently outlawed data transfer agreement known as the the “Safe Harbour” framework.

Italy calls for urgent stabilisation in Libya

Italy hosted 23 nations belonging to a US-led coalition in Rome, to discuss measures to prevent the Islamic State from acquiring control over Libya.

The coalition identified the potential capture of Libya by the Islamic State, which would facilitate the targeting of the West from the Mediterranean, as a serious cause for concern requiring immediate action.
