Sri Lanka’s inflation rate declines

The National Consumer Price Index has revealed a decline in Sri Lanka’s inflation rate in January 2016.

The country’s consumer prices have recorded a decrease of 0.7 percent from prices in January last year.

Leaders of the IDU meet in Colombo

The Executive Committee of the International Democrat Union (IDU), as well as its Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, is scheduled to meet for the first time in 2016, in Colombo.

The IDU’s member organisation in Sri Lanka, the United National Party, will be hosting the meeting.

Strict ban imposed on the use of polythene

The Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife, Mr. Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, has mandated strict measures to combat the use of polythene.

The instructions are intended to stem the continued use of polythene, despite the formal ban on its use in national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.



Bolivian President, Hugo Morales has lost a referendum to allow him to run for a fourth term in office.

The referendum would have cleared the way for President Morales to seek another term at elections scheduled for 2019.

Syrian Government agrees on US-Russia brokered ceasefire

The Al-Assad government has stated its willingness to comply with the deal brokered by the United States and Russia to cease hostilities in Syria.

However, the deal reflects the Syrian government’s insistence that attacks on the Islamic State, al-Nusra and other UN-designated terrorist groups can continue.

Nepal plane wreckage found

Authorities in Western Nepal have located the wreckage of the small aircraft that was earlier declared to be missing.

All 23 people on board the Tara Air flight, which was scheduled to arrive in the town of Jomson in Nepal, are presumed dead.
