George Soros interested in investing in Sri Lanka

The billionaire and well known investor George Soros said that Sri Lanka holds potential for investment and tourism, speaking at the Sri Lanka Economic Forum.

He also expressed satisfaction at the new Government’s accomplishments in a short span of time.

Norway-Sri Lanka relations strengthen

The successful visit of the Norwegian Foreign Affairs Minister has restored bilateral relations with Sri Lanka, which were strained in the past, according to Foreign Affairs Minster Mangala Samaraweera.

The Norwegian diplomat’s visit concluded yesterday with a business forum with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce in the evening.

Ban Ki-Moon applauds President Sirisena on first year in office

Secretary General of United Nations, Ban Ki-moon has congratulated President Sirisena on a successful first year in office, commending the forthcoming constitutional reforms in particular.

The Secretary General said efforts made at achieving a stable and long term political settlement, durable peace and economic prosperity are laudable.

Chinese markets in deep crisis

A boosted yuan value seems to have temporarily settled the weakening share market scenario in China, which has shaken the global economy.

Markets in the United States and Europe face repercussions of the collapse of the Chinese share market, as it recorded its shortest day of a half an hour trading session.

Unrest in Yemen on the rise

Iran has accused Saudi Arabia of airstrikes on the Iranian embassy in Yemen, amid escalating hostilities between Iran and Saudi.

Meanwhile, residents of Sanaa believe Yemen’s capital is currently witnessing the worst air raid of the nine month history of the Houthi-rebellion against Yemen’s government.

North Korea’s hydrogen bomb testing invokes global response

South Korea has begun its loudspeaker broadcasts in North Korea in response to Pyongyang’s claims of successful nuclear experimentation. The US Navy expressed concern over the testing which could result in its closer military alliances with South Korea and Japan.

In the meantime, former Pentagon chief William Perry raised concerns that nuclear weapons presented a greater risk today than they did in the second World War.
