Consulate General office to be opened in Milan
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken the initiative to set up a Consulate General office in Milan.
Following its scheduled opening today, the office, together with the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Rome, will serve Sri Lanka’s considerable expatriate community living in Italy.
Jetwing signs Global Code of Ethics for Tourism
The leading hospitality brand, Jetwing, has signed the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.
Jetwing is the first company in Sri Lanka to sign the code, adopted by the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization as a frame of reference for responsible and sustainable tourism.
Sri Lanka improves its Global Offshoring Index ranking
The consulting firm, A.T. Kearney, has ranked Sri Lanka in 14th position in its annual Global Services Location index for 2016.
Sri Lanka has moved up two positions from its previous position on the index, which ranks countries based on their financial and business attractiveness as outsourcing destinations.
National League for Democracy assumes power in Myanmar
The National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Aung San Suu Kyi, is set to form a majority-government in Myanmar.
The new parliament convenes for the first time today, following last year’s vote that saw the NLD win 77 percent of elected seats.
Prayer rights granted for women at the Western Wall
The Israeli government has approved the establishment of a permanent and separate area for mixed gender praying at the Western Wall.
This decision signifies a landmark victory for the ‘Women of the Wall’, a group of Israeli and diaspora Jews, which has campaigned for 27 years to demand equality in prayer at the revered religious site in Jerusalem.
Boko Haram carries out attack in northeastern Nigeria
At least 86 people have been killed in a series of recent attacks carried out by Boko Haram militants in northeastern Nigeria.
The region has been frequently targeted by the group and has also been used to carry out cross-border attacks on the neighbouring states of Chad, Cameroon and Niger.
